Rain Fell On Alabama Last Night

"Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry anymore."

- The Grateful Dead, Uncle John's Band

I know you deadheads are going to immediately point out that the second line is the song is "... when life looks like easy street there is danger at your door", but never mind all that. And keep in mind that Ashleigh and I don't even have a door at this time, so it's impossible to be applicable.

So in regards to Jerry, Phil and all the other Dead, I'll agree the first DAY was the hardest day, in fact. Ever since our first eleven hour trek, we have been on short legs of our trip. Apart from being attacked by some king hell rain on a number of occasions, Alabama has been very good to us. I heard Mr. Young sing about her, and I heard ole' Neal put her down. It damn well could have been something about torrential downpours. On the plus side, however, the temperature has been very reasonable. Everyone in the state has remarked that we came the best week of the entire year.

It began with meeting up with cousin Jeremy at a pizza place in Birmingham, and then moving on to a bar that looked like you were drinking in Roman ruins. Rachael met up with us as soon as she could, and enjoyed a few cold ones amongst the white marble statues and columns. Afterwards, we hung out by their pool, and caught up. It was fantastic. Jeremy had some slippers that appeared to be happy to see us.

Yes, that is what it's supposed to look like on the toes. Anyhow, they were awesome for letting us stay on a school night. They have both been working like crazy.

A few hours and rainstorms later, we found ourselves in a cabin located by a lake in Ft. Rucker. Sister Allie and Brother Josh had gotten the cabin for a few days since a few of Allie's friends and we were coming in. It was an awesome cabin, but unfortunately the first day was filled with rain. The evening cleared up, and we grilled some chicken and made fajitas. The night ended with Ashleigh and I dominating (they were actually only two pie pieces behind) a game of Trivial Pursuit. Although, in all fairness, we lucked out with some pretty easy questions. For example, in the Science section; "What color is a blue balloon?".

Josh was a trooper (figuratively, as well) because he had worked a twelve hour day, and then came out to eat heavy and delicious German food with us. He propped open his eyelids for an hour afterward even.

I was surprised that even amidst his fatigue, he did a dash from the house to the car like a well-rested man. It should be noted though that we were all running to the car, trying to avoid being struck by lightning. There were bolts that looked like they were 200 yards away. Ashleigh said that one blinded her for a moment.

The best was the screened in porch, which is shown above... along with the trusty computer... will the circle be unbroken? Is that a Skynnrd song?
